The hosted end of the e-commerce trade-off

Shopify is the opposite choice to a self-hosted store. There is no server to patch, no plugin conflict after an update and no checkout to secure — that is the platform’s job, and the checkout in particular is the part it does not let anyone else touch on lower plans.

What you give up is control and the ability to leave cheaply. Themes and apps cover most needs, but a deeply custom flow eventually meets a wall, and transaction fees apply unless payments run through Shopify Payments. For most merchants that is a good trade; for one with an unusual fulfilment or B2B pricing model it is worth testing before migrating.

  • Hosted checkout

PCI compliance, fraud checks and conversion optimisation handled by the platform.

  • Themes

A theme store plus a template language for teams that want to build their own.

  • App ecosystem

Thousands of apps for shipping, subscriptions, reviews, tax and marketplaces.

  • Multi-channel selling

One inventory across the online store, point of sale and connected marketplaces.

  • International

Multi-currency, market-specific pricing and localised domains for cross-border selling.

  • APIs

Admin and Storefront APIs for headless builds and back-office integrations.

Price the whole basket, not the plan

Before comparing monthly plans, add the apps, the theme and the payment fees. That total is the number that decides between hosted and self-hosted.
